وقد تنشأ العديد من المشكلات، التي تواجه الأسرة، وتعوقها عن تحقيق أهدافها، وتأتي علي رأس هذه المشكلات إصابة أحد أفراد أسرتها باضطراب طيف التوحد، ويعد التوحد من أكثر أنواع الإعاقات، التي تحتاج إلي الرعاية، لما لها تأثير كبير علي شخصية الفرد، وعلي أسرته، وجماعاته، والمجتمع الذي يعيش فيه.
وتعمل طريقة العمل مع الجماعات، علي أساس مساعدة أعضاء الجماعة علي الحصول علي الخبرات والمهارات، وتهدف إلي تعديل السلوك، والاتجاهات في بيئة أمهات أطفال التوحد، داخل الأسرة، وخارجها.
